SHOW OF HANDS

  • Southsea Folk And Roots Festival 2002 - Saturday August 31st - The Gaiety Bar - South Parade Pier

   Phil - Beer

Phil Beer
'England's leading acoustic duo' (Q Magazine) The West Country duo Show Of Hands have taken acoustic music to a new level, return to the South Parade Pier again for the Southsea Folk & Roots Festival 2002.

Hot from their sell-out success at the Royal Albert Hall in 2001- their second packed visit to the RAH - Show Of Hands bring their unique brand of acoustic music back to Southsea after their superb concert their last year.

Show Of Hands are songwriter Steve Knightley and multi-instrumentalist Phil Beer. Show Of Hands create their own unique musical style by combining the melodic and narrative strengths of English and Celtic traditional music with instruments and textures from other traditions. Their instruments include the cuatro from South America, the cello-mandolin from Eastern Europe, the slide guitar from the USA, and the mandolin from Italy, all performed with a 'rock' mentality, honed from playing in electric bands and in bars and pubs.

2001 was the best year yet for Show Of Hands. Their Royal Albert Hall concert was filmed by Carlton TV and transmitted in October to a viewing audience of over ¼ million people, they were the top CD-selling act at the Cambridge Folk Festival and, in August, they were the subject of a major feature in the Times Colour Supplement.

In September 2001 the duo released their ninth Show Of Hands album, "Cold Frontier", which showes Steve and Phil's musical virtuosity at its best as they play a variety of instruments including the mandocello, concertina, guitar, fiddle, cuatro and viola. Show Of Hands' music has been hailed as 'stylish', 'unique', 'lyrical', 'formidable' and 'excellent'.

Q Magazine's 4 star review of the album 'Cold Frontier' in the October 2001 issue says 'All are vibrant, original songs delivered on acoustic instruments but with a rock 'n' roll strut...play it loud. Only Show Of Hands can do this.'
Show Of Hands are one act that is NOT to be missed!
